The Starry Night
Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890)
1889
Oil on canvas
“The sight of the stars always makes me dream,” Vincent van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo. The Starry Night, completed a year before his death, seems to presage modern painting in this moody and expressionistic work.
Based on the view from his bedroom window at the asylum in Saint-Rémy, Vincent painted the scene over twenty times in various light and weather. Although not permitted to paint in his room, the hospital generously gave him a studio on the ground floor where he put paint to canvas after his observations at night. The village in the painting was drawn from memory, since he could not see it from his bedroom, and a Flemish church imported from his native country was added. But his most famous vision of the swirling, starlit night sky dominates the landscape. “This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise with nothing but the morning star.”
This iconic moment is captured in our richly colored luminary.
I purchased my first set of Modgy Luminaries last year at the Virtual Van Gogh. I had never seen anything like them! We ended using them on our porch the rest of the summer. They added a little fun to our evenings. I then purchased more luminaries for my friends for the holidays. They all loved them!
Have not personally used them - purchased these - along with the vases to give as gifts. I personally have and am using the vases - they are fabulous!
I ordered the luminaries to use as remembrances to my 12 friends when we gather at Hilton head for a week. The house we have rented has a pool with the deck and hot tub. We’ll use the luminaries in the evening to make the event more memorable and they will be able to pack them in a small spot in their suitcases on their way home. I do find them difficult to open but once they’re open and filled with water, they are great.
Amazing purchase for myself. I have these floating lights/candles to go along with my V.G. mask. This purchase was inspired from the V.G. exhibit that my family and I went to recently in D.C. Exceptional addition to my unique collection.
Love them, they make great gifts, everyone loved them! I’ll definitely buy more in the future. I look forward to seeing all the patterns.
