The Story

JULES VERNE 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA
Jules Verne (1828–1905) was a French writer and a pioneer of early science fiction, celebrated for his thrilling adventures and imaginative use of science and technology. Growing up in Nantes, he once tried to run away to sea as a cabin boy but was caught and brought home by his father, who made him promise that from then on he would travel only in his imagination. Verne kept that promise, creating remarkable journeys that carried readers around the world and beyond.

Among his most famous novels is Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), which follows Professor Aronnax on a mysterious voyage beneath the oceans aboard the submarine Nautilus, commanded by the enigmatic Captain Nemo. Verne’s other celebrated works include Journey to the Center of the Earth, Around the World in Eighty Days, and From the Earth to the Moon. Blending adventure with scientific curiosity, his novels helped inspire generations of readers and laid the foundation for modern science fiction.
