Deer They Come

Although it is not known exactly how knitting began, it appears to have originated in the Middle East in the 5th century. The oldest knitted artifact is a pair of socks from Egypt dating to the 11th century. They are knit in an intricate geometric pattern from white and indigo cotton, which many might describe as Fair Isle today. Fair Isle is a catch-all phrase that describes any knitting with two or more colors per row resulting in a pattern. However, many variations in the tradition of color stranded knitting are also found in Scandinavia and Iceland. The strands of yarn carried across the reverse of the garment create another layer of insulation, ideal for keeping warm in colder climates.

Our vase is inspired by vintage Nordic ski sweaters, featuring a pair of leaping reindeer surrounded by stylized snowflakes.
