The Story

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
The best-known early version of Beauty and the Beast was written in 1740 by French author Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve. Her variation appeared in her collection of fairy tales entitled La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins, and was much longer and more elaborate than later versions.
Villeneuve’s tale included detailed histories for both Beauty and the Beast. The Beast was revealed to be a prince cursed by a fairy, while Beauty was secretly of noble birth. The story explored court life, magic, and the idea that kindness and love could see beyond outward appearances.
Later, in 1756, Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont shortened Villeneuve’s complex tale into a simpler moral story for young readers. Beaumont’s version became the one most widely known, but Villeneuve created the rich original narrative that shaped the classic tale.
