The tradition of carving jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland in the 19th century and appears to have been inspired by an Irish folktale about “Stingy Jack.”
The Irish called this restless spirit ‘Jack of the Lantern’ and then ‘Jack O’Lantern,’ which became the name of the carved illuminated turnips that warded off bad spirits. It was not until the Irish came to America with their Halloween traditions that pumpkins became the jack-o-lantern’s that still keep Stingy Jack and other mischievous ghosts away.
