Wolves generally tend to get a bad rap and are often portrayed as the villains of the animal kingdom. They are actually very intelligent and play a critical role in healthy ecosystems.
Being very social animals, wolves mate for life and live in family groups called ‘packs’ that work together to raise pups, hunt and protect each other.
Wolves predate dogs by thousands of years. Man began to domesticate wolves around 15,000 to 40,000 years ago. Amazingly, all dog breeds known today are descended from the grey wolf.
A classic myth is that wolves howl at the moon. Although our wolf seems to be doing just that, he’s probably only trying to communicate with his pack. Since each wolf has a unique vocal signature in their howl, his pack will be able to recognize his call and let him know where they are.
