Cherry blossoms, or sakura, herald spring, symbolize life and renewal.
America’s introduction to these flowering trees had its beginnings in 1885 when writer, photographer, and first female board member of the National Geographic Society, Eliza Scidmore, returned from Japan. Her passion for them resulted in a campaign to beautify The Capital by planting cherry trees along the Potomac River. In 1912, with the help of First Lady Helen Taft, Japan became aware of the plan and gifted over 3000 trees in a gesture of friendship to the American people.
