Dating
back to the 3rd century, Saint Nicholas was revered as the patron saint of
children and sailors. His feast day, celebrated on December 6th, became known
for acts of generosity and gift-giving—especially to children. Over time, these
traditions blended seamlessly into Christmas celebrations.

Originally
portrayed as a slender, benevolent man in a red bishop’s robe, Saint Nicholas’s
image evolved through art and literature. The transformation began with Clement
Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem “’Twas the Night Before Christmas,” which
described him as a “jolly old elf” with a “little round belly.” This depiction
inspired political cartoonist Thomas Nast, who in 1881 created the now-iconic
image of Santa Claus: a cheerful, white-bearded man in a red suit, carrying a
sack of toys. Nast also imagined Santa’s home at the North Pole—because,
really, where else would he live with his reindeer?
