Danse macabre, or skeletons dancing, is a theme that originated in medieval times. Part allegory and part satire, the often humorous depictions showed skeletons dancing and mocking the wealthy, implying that despite their riches they cannot escape the inevitable.

The famous symphonic piece, also entitled Danse Macabre, was written by French composer Camille Saint-Saëns in 1875. Based on a French legend, Death rises once a year on Halloween at midnight and plays the violin to summon the skeletons for a graveyard dance party.

Along the same lines, Walt Disney created an animated short called The Skeleton Dance in 1929 as part of his Silly Symphony series. In it, skeletons rise up in a churchyard and merrily dance and play instruments made from their own bones.
